Size Shaming: Not Just For Plus

I have been on the skinner and petite side all of my life. Sometimes I go through life with no problems but I do face some criticisms about my weight.

Some people might not think the things they are saying are offensive or disheartening, but, if your anything like me , you hear some of these on a daily basis.

  • you’re like the size of my pinky!
  • I was the size of you in preschool
  • you’re just all skin and bones
  • I could just flick you and you could break
  • your SOOO skinny! what do you wear? a size 000
  • what do you weigh like 60 pounds?
  • you need to eat a cheeseburger to put some meat on those bones

Now to the average ear, this might not sound bad or rude or offensive, but to me, it can be. Some think that people who are on the skinnier side don’t get offended by things like this. The tone some people use is another huge key to how it can be interpreted. A lot of the times it is in a passive aggressive manner or almost in a way that they are talking down to you. And yes all of the above I have actually been told before. If I turned these phrases around to fit people who may be heavier, you can see how  offensive they can be.

  • your like the size of a whale!
  • you are all fat and flubber
  • your soo big! what size do you wear? like a XXXXXL
  • what do you weigh like 600 pounds?
  • you need to stop eating to loose some weight.

You don’t wanna go around say anything this rude, horrid stuff to people. But it is the same offensive things I hear a lot. No one wants to hear any of the above, big or small.

Working in retail ,and especially in a job when on a daily basis I work hands on with customers to help find outfits and look good and feel good, A lot of the times when i’m helping someone they don’t want to take my advice or believe me when I tell them that the thing they are self conscious is not noticeable. They say; ” You don’t have any problem areas”, ” you never have trouble finding clothes that fit you right”. But they couldn’t be more wrong.

Everybody, big, skinny, short, tall, petite, EVERYBODY has things that when they look in the mirror, that is all they see. Everybody can have trouble finding clothes that fit them. Everyone can be jealous of what others have and they don’t. But everyone is special, and unique and BEAUTIFUL. It doesn’t matter who you are, what size you wear, or what you look like, you are beautiful. Yes, size shaming is a problem, but its more than just big size shaming, there is plenty of small size shammers out there too. We all need to Love and Accept each other. We are all humans, humans with feelings and emotions. Spread love and keep an open mind! WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL

  1. My Hubby (The Man) is in a similar boat to yourself…and he hates it! Trying to find clothes to fit him is a nightmare more times than it’s not. Add to that everyone (including his Mum!) telling him to eat more….argh!!! He eats double the serving size I do…he’s just blessed/cursed with a fast metabolism and runs around at work all shift so food doesn’t get a chance to do anything but be burnt off him.

I totally agree that EVERYBODY has some body image issues, regardless of size. We’re always wanting something to be different. I’ve certainly learnt to be a bit more circumspect when it comes to chatting with smaller sized people and to not be dismissive of their own concerns with their bodies.

Thank You so much for sharing such a delicate topic and putting your own perspective out there. 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. The Man gets super frustrated when we can find so many clothes in XL and above…would love to see a Slim & Petite store open up instead of another Big & Tall. Both are needed in the world.

    What a great read!!! 😀

The Man is in a similar boat himself and has certainly opened my eyes to the issues of the slimmer build people of the world.

Every body is beautiful and all of us, at one time or another, have body image issues…doesn’t need to be logical, it just is.

Thank You @JessieMaesWorld for writing this great Post.
